Policy Statement : The federal government shall provide special funding to provinces for the enhancement of Rest Areas and OnRoutes along major trucking corridors. This funding will be dedicated to:

Expanding secure truck parking for resting and overnight stays. Building LCV dismantle areas for safer and more efficient cargo transfer. Developing designated pick-up and drop-off zones. Enhancing general facilities, including sanitation, food options, and safety measures.
This policy aims to improve driver well-being, road safety, and operational efficiency for the trucking industry, supporting Canada’s supply chain and economic growth.

  1. PurposeTo provide substantial federal funding to provinces for the expansion and enhancement of Rest Areas and OnRoutes along major inter-provincial highways, including the Trans-Canada Highway and the 400-Series Highways. This funding aims to improve road safety, increase secure truck parking, and ensure adequate facilities for long-haul and combination vehicle operators.

ScopeThis policy applies to all provinces and territories receiving federal infrastructure funding for highway maintenance and development, particularly for rest stops along: The Trans-Canada Highway (spanning multiple provinces), The 400-Series Highways in Ontario and other major inter-provincial trucking corridors.
  3. Definitions
      Rest Areas & OnRoutes: Designated locations along highways where truck drivers and other travelers can rest, refuel, and access amenities.
    1. Secure Truck Parking: Designated overnight truck parking spaces with security measures to protect drivers and their vehicles.
    2. LCV Dismantle Areas: Special safe zones for Large Combination Vehicles (LCVs) where drivers can detach, reassemble, or transfer cargo efficiently.
    3. Pick-up and Drop-off Zones: Secure locations allowing commercial truck drivers to exchange cargo safely without obstructing highway traffic.
